Washington, DC. –  On April 9, 2019, Dr. William Padula, NPUAP Treasurer, and Dr. Janet Cuddigan, NPUAP President, provided written testimony to the House Committee on Appropriations; Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies to explore new payment models that could further increase innovation and incentivize the prevention or pressure injuries.

Dr. Padula cited from his paper, Value of hospital resources for effective pressure injury prevention: a cost-effectiveness analysis that “The national cost of hospital-acquired pressure injuries in the United States”, revealing that “pressure injuries affect 2.5 million patients, resulting in 60,000 deaths and over $26 billion in U.S. healthcare expenditures”.  To read Dr. Padula’s paper please visit: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30097490

Drs. Padula and Cuddigan also brought to the Subcommittee’s attention that even though Medicare has introduced advanced payment models related to pressure injury prevention, they appear “to have leveled off” and possibly need a revamp.
