Q 2 Hour Turning & 30 Degree Lateral Positioning Science or Tradition?

Q 2 Hour Turning & 30 Degree Lateral Positioning Science or Tradition?
During the April 12, 2012 webinar entitled Q 2 Hour Turning & 30 Degree Lateral Positioning Science or Tradition? the following topic was discussed. When it comes to prevention of pressure ulcers, turning is the most expensive of all the interventions we use. The q 2hr. turning schedule came out of a textbook on the medical history of World War II. While basic scientists have used a variety of physical, cellular and animal models to examine the intensity and duration of pressure that result in injury, for many years little clinical research has been available to answer the questions that clinicians and administrators need to know. Must repositioning take place every two hours? Can some patients tolerate longer intervals between turns? What factors differentiate those who can tolerate longer intervals between turns from those who cannot? Is the length of turning interval affected by the mattress used? What positioning strategies are most effective in preventing pressure and can using these strategies lengthen the amount of time a patient stays in one position. In the past 5-6 years, researchers have begun to make some headway in addressing these issues. Presented By: Barbara Braden, PhD, RN, FAAN

I could listen to Dr. Braden read the phonebook! Once again though, an excellent presentation on something I thought I knew something about only to find out there was more to learn!
