The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) fosters and supports research on pressure ulcer prevention and treatment. The organization provides small grant awards ($1,500.00) to novice researchers from any health care or basic science discipline. The funds are intended to support preliminary research efforts (including dissertations) for young investigators who are likely to have promising academic careers in pressure ulcer research. The NPUAP Research Award will be announced at the 9th NPUAP National Conference, February 2005, in Tampa, FL. The deadline for proposal submission is November 1, 2004. For a copy of the program announcement and application form, please contact the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, 12100 Sunset Hills Road, Suite 130, Reston, VA 20190 or call 703-464-4849. The specific goals of NPUAP Research Awards are to further the understanding of pressure ulcer prevention and treatment through basic science, clinical and health services research. Goals of individual research projects might include (but are not limited to):
- physiologic (or pathologic) mechanisms and behavioral factors involved in pressure ulcer prevention or treatment.
- therapeutic modalities that protect and restore tissue vitality;
- evaluation of health services designed to prevent or improve pressure ulcer care.
Eligibility:
Health care professionals and basic scientists who are in the early states of developing a research program to investigate the etiology, prevention, or treatment of pressure ulcers are eligible to apply. The award may be used to support dissertation research. Preference will be given to projects that:
Proposal Requirements:
- have not been previously funded;
- show a strong potential for filling gaps in knowledge regarding the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers;
- show promise of improving the quality of patient care;
- pilot projects that are likely to lead to larger and more competitive awards;
- projects that are likely to launch a career in pressure ulcer research.
A complete proposal must include five (5) copies of the following (double-sided copies preferred):
- Completed NPUAP Research Award Application Form
- An abstract. The abstract should consist of a 250-word summary of the proposed study.
- A full description of the project. This section should be single spaced, no smaller than 12 point font, with one inch margins and should not exceed 5 pages.
- Background and significance of the project. This section should briefly identify and describe the problem to be studied and justify the need for study.
- Specific study questions or hypotheses.
- Experimental design and methods. A full description of sampling, subject recruitment, study variables, measurement instruments, techniques, and proposed methods for data analysis should be provided.
- Appropriate references should be provided.
- Description of available resources and institutional support. (< 1 page)
- Detailed time line not to exceed 1 year (graphical representation with text description)
- Detailed budget not to exceed $1,500.00 (<1 page)
- Appendix with supporting documentation:
- Curriculum vitae (or NIH Biosketch) of principal Investigator and all co-investigators affiliated with the study (abbreviate each to <=2 pages).
- A letter of support from the institution or agency where the study will be conducted.
- If the Principal Investigator is a trainee (e.g., student/post-doc), a support letter and CV (or NIH Biosketch) from the Research Mentor is required.
- Copy of appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and subject consent forms (if required). If IRB approval has not been secured by the time of application, it must be provided by December 1, 2004 for the grant to be awarded.
