Healthy People 2010: Pressure Ulcer Objective

New objectives for the nation's health have been developed. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel played an active role by providing testimony to the Healthy People Consortium. As a result of the NPUAP's efforts, Healthy People objective specifically addresses the issue of pressure ulcers.

Healthy People 2010 Objective 1-16: "Reduce the proportion of nursing home residents with current diagnosis of pressure ulcers."

Target: no more than 8/1000 residents (.8%)

Baseline: 16/1000 (1997 data)

Target setting method: 50% decrease in prevalence and improvement over baseline

Inclusion of a "pressure ulcer objective" will focus the nation's attention and resources on addressing this important health care concern. Healthy People 2010 objectives were launched at a national conference in Washington, DC on January 24-28, 2000. NPUAP board members presented a poster at this conference and offered their assistance to the Surgeon General's Office and CDC as they monitor this objective.
